Who are Helping Hands?

Helping Hands was founded in 2001 with just a mobile phone and a vision to meet the needs of the local Jewish community.

Today, we are a vital part of Brighton & Hove’s Jewish community, supported by over 70 dedicated volunteers.

As a cross-communal support network, we provide practical and emotional assistance to those in need. Our service is known for being caring, efficient, and confidential, and we currently assist over 100 clients, having responded to more than 20,000 requests since our inception.

Helping Hands is entirely volunteer-run, offering services like shopping, befriending, transportation, and regular check-in calls. We also host four community lunches/teas each year, including a Summer Garden Party in July, to bring people together.

If you'd like to join us, please contact us at 01273 747722 or helpinghands4sussex@gmail.com. Transport is available, and while there is no charge, donations are always welcome.

Our Mission

At Helping Hands, our mission is to provide practical and emotional support across the community, such as visiting or calling the lonely, shopping for the housebound, and offering transport to medical appointments.

We are known for being a caring, efficient, and confidential service, though we are not a professional care provider. As a volunteer-run organization, we cannot guarantee immediate availability of services.

We connect volunteers with opportunities through a database, matching those in need with those able to help. Volunteers are supported both within Helping Hands and by external professionals when needed. However, volunteers cannot administer medication or take on domestic tasks.

We work alongside existing community organisations, providing additional volunteers to support their efforts.
